Home News Articles RoHS & REACH Compliance for Export Faste...

When sourcing screws, bolts, and fasteners for the European market, two regulatory frameworks dominate: RoHS and REACH. For importers outside the EU, fastener RoHS REACH compliance is not optional — it is a hard customs requirement. Non-compliant shipments are rejected, returned, or destroyed. This article explains what the standards require, and what to verify before your next order.

What RoHS Means for Metal Fasteners

RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances, Directive 2011/65/EU) limits six substances — lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, PBB, and PBDE — in electrical and electronic equipment. Why does RoHS apply to screws and bolts?

The answer lies in the supply chain. If your fastener ends up inside an electronic enclosure, a household appliance, or an automotive control unit, the finished product manufacturer must prove every component — including every screw — is RoHS-compliant. Even for purely mechanical fasteners, many EU distributors now request RoHS documentation as standard practice.

For metal fasteners, the primary risk is hexavalent chromium (Cr6+) , found in certain passivation and plating processes. Zinc-plated screws with trivalent chromium passivation (Cr3+) are generally compliant. Confirm with your supplier which plating chemistry was used — and request a test report when in doubt.

REACH: Beyond Six Substances

REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation, and Restriction of Chemicals, EC 1907/2006) casts a much wider net. The SVHC Candidate List contains over 240 substances and is updated twice a year. For fastener importers, three groups matter most:

  1. Chromium VI compounds — same risk as RoHS, but REACH goes further by requiring authorization above 0.1% w/w. If your screw supplier still uses Cr6+ passivation, the product is effectively barred from the EU market unless a specific authorization has been granted.

  2. Lead and lead compounds — relevant for free-cutting steel fasteners. Certain carbon steel screws use lead as a machining aid. Under REACH, lead above 0.1% w/w at the article level triggers information obligations under Article 33: you must inform the downstream customer upon request.

  3. Phthalates and plasticizers — relevant when fasteners include nylon patches, lock inserts, or plastic washers. Nylon-lock nuts (DIN 985 / DIN 982) and self-sealing screws with nylon rings must be checked against phthalate restrictions.

Fastener RoHS REACH compliance requires two parallel checks: a RoHS screening for the six restricted substances, and a REACH declaration confirming no SVHC exceeds the 0.1% threshold. For buyers managing multi-region supply chains, achieving reliable fastener RoHS REACH compliance across every shipment means selecting suppliers with in-house quality labs rather than relying on one-off external testing.

How to Verify Compliance Before Ordering

Importers often treat compliance as a checkbox on a supplier self-declaration. A responsible approach includes three steps:

Step 1 — Request a material composition report. Ask for a third-party lab test (SGS, TUV, Bureau Veritas, or Intertek) covering RoHS and REACH SVHC screening. A supplier's in-house statement is not sufficient for customs clearance in Germany, France, or the Netherlands. For importers handling mixed fastener shipments, verifying fastener RoHS REACH compliance at the batch level — not just the product catalog level — is essential to avoid border delays.

Step 2 — Confirm plating specs. For zinc-plated fasteners, specify "trivalent chromium passivation, Cr6+-free." For stainless steel fasteners (A2/A4), confirm no intentional SVHC addition during manufacturing.

Step 3 — Maintain batch traceability. If your shipment mixes fasteners from multiple batches, each batch needs its own documentation. EU customs test random samples; one failed batch may hold the entire container.

A well-prepared supplier provides a compliance dossier including RoHS test reports, a REACH SVHC declaration, and a material data sheet — all in English and dated within 12 months.

Summary

RoHS and REACH are not bureaucratic hurdles — they are market access requirements. For any buyer importing screws and bolts into the EU, fastener RoHS REACH compliance starts with choosing a supplier who understands European chemical regulations and can provide verifiable third-party documentation. The cost of non-compliance — returned shipments, blacklisted containers, and broken customer relationships — far exceeds the cost of getting it right from the start.
